Random name picker

Paste your class list, team or group of friends, then spin to choose someone at random. Winners are removed after each spin, so you can work through everyone once.

“Remove from wheel” deletes this entry from your list so it can’t come up again. Undo brings it back.

How to pick a random name

  1. Add the names. Replace the sample names with your own, one per line. You can copy a column of names from a spreadsheet and paste it in one go.
  2. Spin the wheel. The wheel slows down and stops on one name, which then appears in large type so everyone in the room can read it.
  3. Carry on or undo. The chosen name is taken off the wheel so the next spin picks someone new. Press Undo if you want them back, or switch off Remove the winner after each spin in the Customize tab to keep everyone in every time.

Fair turns in the classroom

Calling on students at random keeps everyone ready to answer and takes the guesswork out of who is picked. A visible wheel helps students see that the choice wasn’t personal. Teachers use a name picker for:

  • cold-calling during questions and discussions,
  • setting a reading or presentation order,
  • handing out classroom jobs for the week,
  • choosing who picks the next activity or who gets the class pet for the weekend.

Save each class as its own wheel in the Save tab, then load the right list at the start of the lesson. The list is stored in that browser only, which is worth remembering on shared school computers.

Meetings and remote teams

Spin to set the speaking order for a stand-up, choose who reviews the next pull request or decide who shares their screen first. Share the wheel with a link so the whole team uses the same list.

Tips for name lists

  • Two people with the same name? Add an initial, such as “Alex P.” and “Alex R.”, so both get their own segment and you can tell them apart.
  • Want to give someone an extra chance? List their name twice. Each line is a separate, equally sized segment.
  • Need groups instead of one name? The team picker splits the same list into random teams in one click.
  • Large class or year group? The wheel holds up to 1,000 names. On very full wheels the name under the pointer is shown below the wheel while it spins.

Privacy for names

Names you type stay in your browser and aren’t uploaded to WheelQuirk. A share link contains the names inside the link itself, so only send it to people who should see the list.

Questions and answers

How do I pick several names at once?

Keep spinning: with Remove the winner after each spin turned on, each spin picks a different person. To split everyone into groups instead, use the team picker.

Can the same name come up twice?

Not while the winner is being removed after each spin, which is the default on this page. If you turn removal off, every spin is independent and the same name can come up again.

Are the names stored on your servers?

No. The list is kept in your browser’s local storage on this device. You can delete it any time from the Save tab.

Can I show the wheel on a classroom screen?

Yes. Open the page on the computer connected to the projector or board. Use your browser’s zoom or full-screen mode (often F11) to make the wheel larger.

I removed a name by mistake. How do I get it back?

Press Undo in the result window, or the Undo bar above the list. You can also type the name back into the list at any time.
